Background Sketch: In the 1930s, thousands of former American slaves dictated their full-life stories to interviewers working for the US government. Their ages ranged from 70 through more than 100 years. They were located in all of the southern states of the United States and a few northern ones. Details

Each of the 44 Articles Has Three Versions:

1. Their original wording in southern dialect (which includes their frequent use of "nigger"):

2. The original wording in southern dialect with word substitutions and minor editing:

We wo'ked in de field wid de rest of de slaves.

3. The Standard English translation:
